I have oily skin. Shouldn't I skip moisturizer?No. Acne-prone and oily skin often has a weaker barrier and fewer ceramides than average, and skipping moisturizer makes it produce more oil, not less.

In a double-blind study, people on prescription acne treatment who added a ceramide moisturizer had lower barrier loss, less dryness and redness, and fewer inflammatory breakouts than those who didn't. Several people in our consumer research reported their oiliness dropped once their barrier healed. The myth that oily skin shouldn't moisturize is one of the most damaging in skincare.

Why does my skin get darker where it's dry?On deeper skin, dryness and irritation both trigger pigment. Ashy elbows that turn dark, eczema patches that leave marks, flaking from a retinoid that becomes a shadow: same mechanism.

Studies of skin structure have found lower ceramide levels in African American skin, consistent with the high rate of dryness in Black skin, though not every study agrees. The pigment response in skin of color runs through signaling pathways that are more active in deeper tones, so the same irritation that a lighter-skinned person shrugs off can leave a mark. Keeping the barrier intact helps keep those marks from forming.

Can I use it with the retinoid (HPR) or AlphaTone?Yes. Apply HydroLipid over AlphaTone in the morning. At night, you can apply it before Retinol Re-Genesis to cushion it, and add a second thin layer after if your skin is new to retinoids. Never exfoliate retinoid flakes; moisturize them.
