The question

Will the retinoid (HPR) make my dark spots worse?

What's happening in your skin

Retinoids speed cell turnover and disperse pigment; they also irritate, and on deeper skin irritation makes pigment. Both things are true, which is why the fear exists and why technique matters more than the ingredient.

What the research shows

  1. Tretinoin lightened post-inflammatory marks in Black patients with no excess darkening or depigmentation; side effects were less frequent than in a comparable white cohort.

    Bulengo-Ransby et al., NEJM 1993 (L023)High

  2. Tazarotene reduced hyperpigmentation severity, intensity, and area in darker skin within 18 weeks with trace-level irritation.

    Grimes & Callender, Cutis 2006 (L024)Moderate

  3. Irritation is mitigated by lower strength, cream vehicles, moisturizer, and sun protection.

Callender et al., Am J Clin Dermatol 2022 (L025)High

Our answer

The retinoid isn't the risk. The irritation is. Start slow, sandwich with moisturizer, never exfoliate flakes, sunscreen every morning.
