FAQs

How long until my dark marks fade?Most people see a first change between weeks 8 and 12. Meaningful fading takes 4 to 6 months. Deep or old marks take longer. Left untreated, marks on deeper skin typically don't begin fading on their own for about 6 months.

Tranexamic acid and niacinamide combinations show benefit at 8 to 12 weeks of daily use. In the landmark NEJM trial in Black patients, treated marks lightened detectably by week 4 while untreated marks only started fading at week 24, which is the natural history you're racing against. Photograph your skin monthly in the same light. Daily change is invisible; monthly change is not.

Is this a bleaching product?No. AlphaTone targets the look of dark marks, not your skin tone. It contains no hydroquinone, no steroids, no mercury, and it is not designed to change the color of unaffected skin.

Hydroquinone remains the most effective single agent for pigment, and long-term unsupervised use is associated with ochronosis, a blue-black staining that is harder to treat than the original marks; patients who developed it had used lightening creams for an average of 9.2 years. Newer combinations of tranexamic acid with niacinamide, kojic, or azelaic acid show comparable improvement with better tolerability and are suited to the long haul. AlphaTone is built for that long haul.

What's in it, and at what percentage?3% tranexamic acid, 2% alpha arbutin, 0.5% bakuchiol, 5% niacinamide, and centella. We publish concentrations so you can compare us to anything else on the shelf.

Will it irritate my skin?It's formulated to avoid that, because on deeper skin irritation makes marks. Start once daily for two weeks, then twice if your skin is comfortable. If it stings, go back to once a day until your skin settles.

In a 12-week head-to-head, azelaic acid and tranexamic acid cleared post-acne marks equally, but azelaic caused more side effects in the first month. Irritation is not a sign that a product is working; on melanin-rich skin it is a sign that new pigment is coming.
