The question
Is SPF 30 enough, and what happens if I don't use enough?
What's happening in your skin
SPF is measured at 2 mg per square centimeter, about a quarter teaspoon for the face. Almost nobody applies that. Protection doesn't fall in proportion to the shortfall; it collapses. A raincoat worn open.
What the research shows
Real-world application runs 0.39 to 1.0 mg/cm², far below the tested 2 mg/cm².
Petersen & Wulf, 2014 (L040)High
At half dose, SPF falls to its square root; at a quarter dose, to its fourth root.
Faurschou & Wulf, Br J Dermatol 2007 (L048)Moderate · confirmed by L049, L050
In strong sun, SPF 100 outperformed SPF 50 in actual use: 56% vs 7% burned more.
Williams et al., JAAD 2018 (L041)High
For active pigment disorders, guidelines call for SPF ≥50 with UVA and visible-light protection.

Our answer
A full dose of SPF 30, reapplied, beats a thin layer of SPF 50 once. But if you're treating pigment, pregnant, on photosensitizing medication, or outdoors for hours, use 50 or higher.
